Blog: Next New

We all know that parking is vital to many of us. It is very difficult to find a parking especially in New York City or during holiday. Even though we  find an spot, we sometimes are not sure can we park here or not. Therefore, I think a new media could be about parking. This media can help users to find available parking spot near you. When one user is ready to leave, he can notify other users near him, and whoever responses faster, he or she can get the parking spot. This media also helps users to figure out whether this spot is parking meter or unavailable at this moment. It also translate into different language, which helps foreigners as well. This media takes a lot of effort and time to complete, but if someone has successfully create it, I strongly believe almost everyone will use it even though it might cost few dollars per month.

Blog: Wiki So Far

I haven't start to contribute our class wiki yet. However, I did some of the research about specific areas that I want to contribute. First, I want to talk about gaming. Although someone already contribute information about this area, but I want to add few of things, such as Rockstar, which is a video game company that creates a lot of interesting and good video games, such as GTA 5 and Red Death Redemption 2. Those are two of the most popular video games so far, and I also play them in my free time. Second, I want to contribute information about Tik Tok, which is a mobile application that creates and shares videos as well as live broadcasting. This app is becoming more and more popular in China, and it starts to spread out to other countries. Third, I want to contribute some information about VR gaming. This is new and interesting experience about gaming. It creates a 3-D artificial environment, and users can experience real feeling when they are playing. I believe VR gaming will

Blog: P2P

P2P filesharing stands for peer-to-peer file sharing, which allows users to access media file through the use of networking technology. Nowadays, people can access movies, songs, videos, books, and games that were shared by another user. In our daily lives, we often use google drive to drop file and share to other users. It becomes much more convenient because we can access the files in any device. In addition, iCloud is a good example of P2P filesharing. It allows users to share files from one device to another without any difficulty. According to the article, Peers Find Less Pressure Borrowing From Each Other  written by Wendy, Kaufman, it talks about P2P leading. Google and other big corporations teamed up to create a platform for people to borrow and lend money in a more easier and cheaper way. Leading Club allows borrowers to borrow money in a lower rate and lenders to lend money to more people by using this technology and platform. The online platform can tremendously reduce th

Blog: Privacy

Although new media has a lot of advantages, it has disadvantages in a subtle way. The biggest and serious issue is privacy. The biggest internet corporations collect our information when we are using the software. They collect our informations and provides and sells them to other big corporations. Those informations include website we visit, our shopping hobbit, and our interests that are analyzed by computer. Some websites of the biggest corporation put tracking software in our computer when we visit their websites. It clearly violates our privacy, but the supreme court ruled that it is ok for them to put tracking in our computers. I was shocked to hear that. In addition, the biggest internet corporation, Google, is monitoring our face and voice when we are using Google. There is a Youtuber who did an experiment. He first found out what kind of advertisements appeared on the website, which are mixed with different products and news. Then, he closed the website and pretended to talk ab

Blog: Advice

If Baruch College hired me to use new media to improve the college, I would implement 3 things. First, I will make a open online Baruch library where has all the textbook students need for different courses. By doing so, students can download the textbooks either for free or cheaper price. The problem is copyright. Therefore, Baruch should negotiate with the publications for a greater deal. We all know that if the textbook is too expensive, we can still find free online textbook online in some ways, but it might takes longer time. Then why don't publication lower the price for college students, so we can download the online version in a cheaper price. It benefits both sides, the publication and students. Second, I will implement a new and updated ID card which allows students and professors entering the building without swiping. We all know that it is annoying to take out our ID card and swipe every time we enter a new building. With a updated ID card, students can enter the buildi

Creativity and New Media

Image
GTA 5 is a online game which is somehow similar to Second Life. They both are virtual world models that represent the realistic environment, and users can talk and interact with each others, but GTA 5 is more violent than Second Life. New media gives people an opportunity to express their creativity in many different ways. For instance, I use GTA 5 as a platform and its sources to create and modify a Lamborghini's car which is shown below. Users can use their creativity to modify their cars and planes. There are numerous combinations which allow users to choose. In GTA 5, you can see cars and planes that are modified by other users, and some are really cool and fascinating.

HW Creativity

All new media and new technologies are created by creativity. All those "new" things are came from use of imagination and original idea to create something that never happened before. People have so many thoughts and ideas in their minds, and sometimes, it is hard to turn their imaginations and ideas into reality. People need resources to do that. According to "The New Math of Mashups" by Sasha Frere-Jones, the article mentions the beginning of mashups during 2003. Jeremy Brown saw the potential of two songs, and combined them together using his software. Great example of mashup song will be "Frontin'on Debra". This song is created from one vocal from one song which is laid with the music from another song. Sometimes, original song is not the best because there are many others beats, lyrics, melody and tempo that are more suitable with the song. This is the power of creativity. Some people can see the strengths and weakness of the song, and they are

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

Virtual Worlds are models that represents the real world. Nowadays, virtual world can be used for many purposes. For instance, there are many online games use virtual world. It makes the games more realistic and interesting. In addition, Airline and automobile use virtual world for practice. I know training pilots use virtual world to practice frights. It is a vital resource for training pilots to practice instead of flying the plane without any experience. This example also applies to training astronauts. There are many advantages of using virtual worlds. According to the article, Going to the Virtual Office in Second Life by Mark Tutton, it mentions that corporations use Second Life as a platform for conference. It says “ As travel budgets are squeezed and slashed in the recession, companies are increasingly seeking innovative ways of bringing employees together for conferences and meetings remotely” (Tutton, 1). Employees can go to conference on their tablets or laptops. It i

Blog: Social networking sites

I personally use Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Wechat frequently in my life. Although Instagram is part of Facebook, they are two different applications, and people use them differently. First of all, let me talk about Facebook. Facebook is a legendary to me. I learned that Facebook came from a college blog in Harvard University. Mark Zuckerberg created it in order to for Harvard students to share whatever they wanted to share. Facebook came from a small community to worldwide corporation. It is incredibly successful evolution for Facebook. Nowaday, people use Facebook to share stories, news, pictures and videos. It is entertained. More importantly, Facebook has a application called Messenger, which people use to send message to friends. I know that more and more American teenagers started to use Messenger to send message, instead of using iMessenger or Skype. It is much convenient to use Messenger to send message to friends or strangers because it is connected with Facebook. The

Blog about Twitter

Twitter discussion have some of the difference from blackboard discussion and in-class discussion. For instance, Twitter can response to particular person by @ that person, or includes a particular topic by # that topic. On the other hands, Blackboard and in-class discussion cannot # or @ particular person or topics. In addition, everyone can see the posts if it is on public, and they can choose to response whenever they want to. However, only the students in class can see your posts in Blackboard, and students have to response immediately if it is in class. Twitter offers more diversity, flexibility, and confidence, whereas, Blackboard and in-class discussion cannot. Furthermore, companies can reach customer in twitter. They can promote product and build customer loyalty. People can follow whatever they are interested. However, it is inappropriate to talk about topics not related to class in Blackboard, and companies definitely cannot reach customer in Blackboard or in-class.

Blog Social networking

Social Networking is a powerful tool for everyone. It is undoubtedly that social networking is vital to become a successful person. The primary goal of social networking is to get connected with each other. For instance, a lot of people use Linkedin as a platform to find jobs, and employers can find the best candidates from those who applies the position. In addition, people use facebook to meet friends and for enjoyment. We also can share everything we want, or post a picture of where I went in this morning, or what I ate for dinner. People can share their remarkable and unforgettable moments to everyone. Furthermore, a lot of corporations and small companies use social networking for marketing purpose. This is a brilliant idea, because it is cost effective, which means corporations save a lot of money by doing so. At the same time, they can get feedback immediately from the public. Corporations also build relationship with customers by social networking. For example, Nike and Adidas

Blog vs. Wiki

Blog and Wiki have a lot of similarities and differences if we look at them closely. Blog usually has only one person who creates and takes care the blog. A lot of bloggers make good living by posting their stories. A lot of them talk about travel, foods and entertainments. They share their opinions and feeling toward those topics, and a lot of people love to read them and subscribe to follow their stories. Wiki is more informal, and it is created by numerous people who post commends, pictures and videos. A lot of people use wiki as a tool to collaborate and communicate to each others. For instance, students can create a Wiki for the class. By doing so, they share what they have learned, the questions they have, or work in a project together. A lot of people would prefer Wiki than Blog if they want to communicate and collaborate. Nevertheless, people can also collaborate in the blog. For example, according to the article "Brooklyn Blog Helps Lead to Drug Raid" by Michael
