New Media and Access for the Disabled - Boom or Bust?


Hello everyone, my topic for the research paper is called "New Media and Access for the Disabled - Boom or Bust?" Undoubtedly, new media brings a lot of advantages to everyone, including the people with different types of disability. Therefore, new media definitely is a "boom". 

First of all, I will talk about how is the life of disabled people and the inconveniences and disadvantages in their lives. After that, I will bring out some examples of new media that helps disabled people. Then, I will analyze how those new media affect them from economic, sociological and other perspectives that are suitable to the example. In addition, I will show how their lives have changed positively since new media comes out. In order to strengthen my argument, I will bring out some scholarly articles and news to support my thesis. Finally, I will summarize all the supporting evidences.

I think it is a good research topic because most people only consider how new media affect community as a whole, but they often forget disable people around us. New media can be the most useful tools for them to survive and fit into the society. Therefore, I think it is a meaningful topic to research and discuss.

If Baruch College hired me to use new media to improve the college, I would implement 3 things. First, I will make a open online Baruch library where has all the textbook students need for different courses. By doing so, students can download the textbooks either for free or cheaper price. The problem is copyright. Therefore, Baruch should negotiate with the publications for a greater deal. We all know that if the textbook is too expensive, we can still find free online textbook online in some ways, but it might takes longer time. Then why don't publication lower the price for college students, so we can download the online version in a cheaper price. It benefits both sides, the publication and students. Even though we  find an spot, we sometimes are not sure can we park here or not. Therefore, I think a new media could be about parking. This media can help users to find available parking spot near you. When one user is ready to leave, he can notify other users near him, and whoever responses faster, he or she can get the parking spot. This media also helps users to figure out whether this spot is parking meter or unavailable at this moment. It also translate into different language, which helps foreigners as well.
